In order to create an experience as close to the original film as possible, The Thing places a variety of mechanisms to work. An initial player is the Thing and the rest are humans in this "hidden role" game. By acting as a human, the Thing can either infect others, prevent survivors from escaping, or attempt to escape with them.

Additionally, players must manage Outpost  in addition to these elements. In the map, players can perform a different action in the same rooms as in the film. In order to avoid being in the cold and dark, human players must feed themselves and keep the boiler and generator on. In order to make life harder for humans, The Thing will try to incapacitate these places...or perhaps it will hide itself among them and infect them when the impeccable opportunity arises.

Gamers attempted to recreate the same sense of paranoia and personal emotions experienced by the film's protagonists.
